Radio Shack Digital Thermometer Mod
This is my Radioshack Digital Indoor/Outdoor thermometer mod used as my temperature monitor. I have always wanted to get me a Compunurse but at the time, one costs around $14 +shipping. But when I was at a local Radioshack, I saw this Indoor/Outdoor thermometer. It has two temp displays on the LCD so I thought, that will be better than a Compunurse. Luckily, Radioshack was already trying to phase out that thermometer model, so I got it for about $10. It's that cheap so I'm not that worried to hack this up and do some modding. Here's a pic:
The full tutorial and some more pics are posted in Gideontech.com's project page. Go there and read about it, as well as other fun projects from the GT staff and members.
Just in case you were reading the article in Gideontech.com, here are some follow up pics for the second probe. Again, since the supposedly "indoor" temp probe is so small, it's best to use it as a CPU probe. I have placed it right beside the CPU core to get the most accurate reading as I can get. To hold the probe in place, I had it loop in the CPU shim. I cut a slit on the shim (it's not metal) so I can loop the probe in and would stay in place even if the wire is pulled.
So far, it gives me very decent readings. There was about 1 degree C difference compared to MBM readings so i guess it's a success. But recently, the difference went up to around 8 degrees C. I'm thinking maybe it's because I was replacing the HS fan around and probably pulled the wire, making the probe farther away from the core. Since I have the temp display on the side panel of my case, i can't take the side panel away from the case due to the wires. I should put some quick disconnects on the probe wires. But I'm lazy. Maybe some other time.
